1. Long Point – Best Beach Weekend Getaway
Located on the shores of Lake Erie, Long Point is a UNESCO biosphere reserve and the fourth oldest provincial park in Ontario. The ultimate beach getaway, it takes just 2 hours to drive to Long Point from Toronto. Surrounded by wineries, Long Point’s pristine white sand beach stretches for 2.2 km through one of the prettiest counties in the province.
The beach and sand dunes in Long Point are particularly unique. They are constantly shifting due to the changing lake levels from Ontario’s weather extremes. This change has contributed to the creation of a system of fragile coastal dunes. Many of which are home to hundreds of plants and animals.
Of those animals, there are around 300 bird species who pass through Long Point throughout the year. Making Long Point the heart of birding in Ontario.
Inland, the Big Creek National Wildlife Area is often considered Canada’s Amazon. An ideal location to go for a kayak or canoe.
The towns nearby are charming, with tons of restaurants to choose from. Long Point is located in Norfolk Country, one of Ontario’s top agricultural regions. As someone who lives in the Northern Ontario bush, this is my favourite Bug Spray brand. It is also worth noting that there are no garbage cans on the beach so everything must be pack-in/pack-out.
2. Niagara-on-the-Lake – Quaint and Charming Small Town Getaway
Niagara-on-the-Lake is arguably one of the prettiest towns in Ontario. Visiting feels as if you have been transported to a quaint town in the UK. Niagara-on-the-Lake is the type of destination where time can be easy spent wandering the streets and meandering through little boutiques. With cozy coffee shops and farm-to-table restaurants in all directions, Niagara-on-the-lake is is one of the best weekend getaways in Ontario.
A trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake is often paired with a trip to Niagara Falls, which are located just 20 minutes away. It is worthwhile to visit both. However, Niagara-on-the-Lake provides a far more rustic and relaxed experience.
Niagara-on-the-Lake is also a foodie haven. This little town is littered with restaurants. Located in an agricultural zone, the restaurants of Niagara-on-the-Lake have access to quality locally sourced ingredients. Which is why they are so spectacular.
In town, you will find pubs like the Olde Angel Inn, which are perfect for casual diners. 3. Algonquin Park/Hunstville – Best Adventurous Weekend Getaway
Established in 1893, Algonquin is the oldest provincial park in Canada. Covering 7,653 square km’s of Canadian wilderness, there are almost 2,400 km’s of lakes and rivers in the park. If you are looking for an adventurous weekend getaway or want to camp this summer, there is no better place.

5. Prince Edward County – Best Ontario Getaway for Wine Lovers
Prince Edward County is one of Ontario’s top wine producing regions. Located just 2.5 hours from Toronto, Prince Edward County is one of the best weekend getaways in Ontario, especially during the summer.
As you drive through Prince Edward County, you will be greeted with sweeping views of vineyards. All with chic wineries and breweries waiting for your visit. With Lake Ontario as its back drop, a visit to Prince Edward Country is nothing short of picturesque. There are over 40 wineries in Prince Edward County so take advantage of the outdoors by strolling through the vineyards and enjoying tastings and small bites from each of the wineries.
There are two provincial parks located in Prince Edward County. Both Sandbank Provincial Park and Presqu’ile Provincial Park offer woodland hiking trails, stunning views of Lake Ontario and swimming opportunities. Sandbanks Provincial Park is also home to some of the largest and most beautiful beaches in Ontario. Nature lovers and adventurers won’t be disappointed as both parks are popular camping destinations.

6. Pelee Island – Most Wholesome/Romantic Summer Weekend Getaway
Pelee Island is the southernmost inhabited location in Canada. It is a wholesome destination that embodies the idea of rest, relaxation and recharge. The Island is located 4 hours from Toronto and you will need to take a ferry to get there. The ferry leaves from either Leamington or Kingsville twice a day and takes 90 minutes.
Peele Island is home to some of the best beaches in Ontario, and the most expansive. The best way to see Pelee island and its beaches is by renting a bike and cycling the island.
Of course, no visit to Pelee Island is complete without stopping by the Pelee Island Winery. It is one of the most celebrated wineries in Ontario. Tastings and tours are offered at the winery. You can also grab a charcuterie box and hangout in the winery pavilion and garden on your visit. Surrounded by vineyards and overlooking Lake Erie, you can grab a bottle of wine and have the perfect night out.
The Island is home to the Pelee Point Provincial Nature Reserve. There are quite a few hiking trails to explore. Pelee Island is an ideal destination for nature lovers as it is considered a bird watchers paradise!

To get to Pelee Island you will need to take a ferry. You can see the schedule and purchase tickets here. You should reserve your ferry to Pelee Island ahead of time. Especially if you are taking a day trip during the summer. Honestly it is best to reserve both ways ahead of time. It costs $7.50 per person or $16.50 per vehicle one way departing twice a day, morning and night.
7. Collingwood/Wasaga Beach – Best of Both Worlds, Beaches and Mountains
A weekend getaway to the Collingwood/Wasaga beach area means you get the best of both worlds, beaches and mountains. Arriving to Collingwood from Toronto takes 2 hours and is the town you should base your weekend getaway from. Collingwood provides easy access to both Blue Mountain and Wasaga Beach.
Blue Mountain Resort is a short 20 minute hop outside of Collingwood. It has plenty of hiking opportunities and quite a few mountain biking trails open in the summer for active adventurers. The Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster, a 1km track that sends you down the mountain at 42km/hour on a sled, is also available at Blue Mountain. The village itself is cute, it is reminiscent of Whistler in BC.
The town of Collingwood is full of wonderful restaurants and cafe’s. It has a beautifully manicured path that runs along the shores of Georgian Bay. It is easy to pass time in Collingwood watching boats come in and out of the bay while wandering the path.
Wasaga Beach is located 25 minutes from Collingwood. It is home to the world’s longest freshwater beach stretching 14kms across the Georgian Bay shoreline. Wasaga is a quintessential beach destination. You will find ice cream shops, beachwear boutiques and chuegy souvenir shops along the main drag. Some might consider it Ontarios ‘Jersey Shore’.

If you plan to visit Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, you should book your daily vehicle permit in advanced to guarantee your spot. It is the busiest provincial park in the province, receiving over 1.5 million visitors each year. You can also book specific beach areas in advanced.
It is also important to consider Tick Safety as they are prominent in the area along with Poison Ivy. Stay on the pathways!
8. Manitoulin Island – Best Summer Weekend Getaway for Hikers of all Levels
Located in Lake Huron, 4 hours from Toronto, Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater island in the world. Famous for its landscapes, hikes and rocky shoreline. A visit to Manitoulin Island makes for one of the most wonderful summer weekend getaways in Ontario.
If you are in pursuit of adventure based weekend getaways in Ontario, Manitoulin Island is an outdoors persons playground. The island provides adventurers of all skill levels access to a number of hiking trails with breathtaking view points. The most popular trail and highest point on the island is the ‘Cup and Saucer Trail’. This trail offers a panoramic view of Lake Huron and should be on your radar.
Manitoulin Island is also home to plenty of amazing beaches. Providence Bay Beach has close to 2 km of pristine white sand and a beautiful boardwalk to walk along. This famous waterfall pours into the perfect swimming pool at its base.

Getting to Manitoulin means you get the chance to experience a ride on the MS Chi-Cheemaun Ferry. To get to the Chi-Cheemaun, you will need to start your weekend with an early morning drive to scenic Tobermory. This is where the ferry departs from. When you board the ferry, head to the passenger deck and grab a spot. This is the best place to enjoy the views of the Lake Huron shoreline and Georgian Bay.

If you plan to take the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry during the summer, you need to make a reservation early. Tickets do sell out. If riding the ferry doesn’t appeal to you, you can actually reach the island via car and bridge by driving to Espanola and down highway 6. This does take significantly longer.
9. 1000 islands – Explore the St. Lawrence River over a Weekend
With over 1800 islands, this unique region in Ontario is located one hour from Kingston and three hours from Toronto. Visitors who plan their weekend getaways in Ontario to the 1000 Islands region will have the opportunity to cruise through the many narrow channels of the St. Lawrence river.
There are tons of 1000 Island’s day cruises leaving from Gananoque. These cruises will have you spending your day on a boat, weaving in and out of the islands while exploring the occasional secluded beach. As you cruise by, many of the islands in the area will have quaint cottages to look at. There are also some over the top larger homes on Millionaires row to see.
Located on one of the Islands is Boldt Castle. During the summer months, Boldt offers visitors the opportunity to explore the castle and castle grounds. It IS located on the American side of the river. If you do plan to explore the castle, make sure you bring your passport.
The 1000 Island region encompasses the essence of cottage country with the charm of small town Ontario. With a number of independent restaurants in the area and breath taking natural vistas of rocky tree lined islands, the 1000 Islands are a great option for an Ontario summer weekend getaway.

When cruising the 1000 Islands, make sure you bring your passport. One side of the river is in Canada, while the other side in the United States. You will want to be able to explore both sides. Boldt Castle is on the United States side of the river so you will require a passport to explore it.
10. Kingston – Best Overall Weekend Getaway in Ontario
This former capital of Canada is home to a UNESCO heritage site and five national historic sites. Kingston sits on Lake Ontario and has more restaurants per capita than any city in Canada. When it comes to weekend getaways in Ontario, Kingston truly has something for everyone.
Kingston is surrounded by Canadian history. You can visit the Fort Henry National Historic Site which was built in 1812 as Kingston’s main defense between the three waterways nearby. Feeling spooky?
