You’ve packed your bags and are ready to head out on a road trip with your friends or family, how exciting! My only question…have you considered what you are going to eat along the way? Do yourself a favour and ditch the unhealthy drive-through and steer clear of those pricey gas station spoils. These road trip snacks are easy to make, simple to pack, and will save you money. Keep your road trip crew happy throughout your trip with these 11 healthy travel snacks and road trip lunch ideas.

1. Pretzels and Hummus
Buy a giant bag of pretzels and portion them off with a side of hummus and you’ve got the perfect healthy travel snacks featuring carbs, protein, and salt!

2. Dry Cereal
Dry cereal as a road trip snack is an underrated and undervalued win. It is nutritious (to a point), can be sugary and sweet, and is easy to pack! Plus cereal is pretty affordable and you can find a flavour to match anyone’s personality.
3. Fresh Fruit
Sometimes it’s the simple things, and fruit is nature’s candy. Along with a variety of sweet and delicious flavours, fruit also provides fast acting carbohydrates to quickly re-energize weary road trippers.






4. Make a Bento Box
This is not only my personal favourite road trip snack, but it is one of my favourite snacks in general. Make yourself a best of all worlds bento box. In a container, you can get special bento lunch boxes here, put in a mix of your favourite finger foods. I am talking cheese, crackers, pepperonis, veggies, dip, hummus, dried fruits, you name it! Bento boxes are simple to make, easy to eat on the go, kids love them, and they are easy to pack. A healthy travel food that keeps everyone energized.
5. Granola/Protein Bars
Granola bars are easy to pack. They come in all kinds of flavours, and you can find them pretty much anywhere. As a road trip snack, they can be quickly consumed throughout the day with little effort. They also fit into purses and bags, leaving no worries for spillage. If you are feeling motivated, you can even make them from scratch at home!

6. Cheese and Pepperoni Sticks
Ahh, the makeshift road trip charcuterie, otherwise known as Cheese and Pepperoni Sticks. This is another personal favourite of mine. I guess I am a sucker for salt. Either way cheese strings/cheese its are a win at any age. If you aren’t a meat consumer, try noble vegan beef jerky instead of pepperoni, it’s delicious.
7. Deli Roll Ups
If you are looking for a more substantial road trip lunch idea, try making deli roll ups! All you need is tortilla wraps, sliced cheese and your favourite deli meat. Simply stack the items on top of each other and roll them up. If you want to level up your lunch, you can add a variety of toppings including sauces, cream cheese or vegetables. They are easy to make, here’s a recipe, and they are clean to pack making them a great healthy travel snack!






8. Cookies
There is nothing wrong with an old fashioned cookie on the go. Everyone loves cookies, that’s just a fact of life. They come in a variety of flavours, are transportable and easily divisible! Road trip win!
9. Popcorn
A nice light snack. Popcorn can be both salty and sweet. It is an easily transportable snack that pretty much anyone can make. Pop a bag of popcorn at home and split it up into personal sized bags. You can level up this road trip snack by adding a variety of flavours to your popcorn, I’m thinking dill pickle, salt and vinegar or of course…the elusive white cheddar.

10. Trail Mix
Whip up a batch of classic trail mix for your next road trip! You can add anything you’d like to trail mix. Think sweet/salty almonds, Shreddies, chocolate chips, M&M’s, dried fruit…really, what ever you want. Trail mix is energy efficient and nutrient friendly. It helps hikers power through their days, so of course it should sustain road trippers.

11. Goldfish
I’m just going to say it, I love goldfish. They are salty, and cheesey, and sweet, and always delicious. They come packaged in small packable containers which make for the perfect no mess, sustainable snack. Plus you can switch up the flavours throughout the trip.
